The three photographs above are from inside one of the Wellington Egg Company's battery hen sheds. Rows of cages, with several birds in each cage. Manure is piled up from the floor to the bottom of the cages, and will not be removed until the hens are deemed too worn out to lay eggs at the required rate. At approximately 18 months of age they will be released from their sentence, only to be sent to slaughter. In the meantime they have to endure not only cruelly cramped conditions, but also high levels of ammonia and other chemicals that are given off by their rotting faeces. They may also have visits from the occasional rat or mouse.
